Secrets of the Phoenix is a cascading slot machine and is also one of most popular slots on the Virgin Games site.
This version of the game was built from the ground up in JavaScript using PIXI.js and our internal slot engine at West Pier Studio which I also helped develop. That engine consists of a base MVC component structure, server communications and a messaging system. The latter two being parts were components I worked on.
My main responsibility on Secrets of the Phoenix was creating the reel set. Obviously being a slot machine there isn’t much ‘gameplay’ in the typical sense, however the spin mechanics need to meet very specific requirements and as such they need to be extremely configurable so that designers can tweak them until everything looks perfect. This was also the first time I had ever created a reel set so it was a new challenge for me. The reels for this are also now the foundation of a few other games currently in development as well so it was important that the code was clean, clear and easily adaptable for other projects.
The game itself looks great and has been a huge success so far due to bringing this incredibly popular game to mobile platforms!
